The organization strives for resources and energy independence, positive impact on communities and access to sustainable raw materials. For IKEA, sustainability means having a positive impact on people and on the planet, while achieving economic growth. One of the main topics Ward discussed during his time with our cohort was sustainable business strategy, including IKEA’s sustainability strategy and their implementation throughout the organization. These help us gain better perspectives in the retail industry and provide real-life examples to build on our theoretical knowledge. After the talk, we were given the opportunity to interview Ward, asking questions we prepared to gain a deeper understanding of the topics he touched on during the discussion. Michael has a passion for retail and a proven track record of driving growth and leading through change on both a country and a global level.ĭiscussions like this one provide a valuable practical element to the MMR experience, allowing us to connect with the material taught in the classroom through real-world examples and interactions with industry leaders. From there he quickly progressed to various positions within IKEA Canada, and then moved onto IKEA globally where he held leadership roles in Sweden, the Netherlands and the United States. Michael’s journey with IKEA began with what started as an internship in 1986.

MICAL SHARE PROGRAM SERIES
This series is a great instructional tool to follow along while bringing your concept from thumbnail sketch to render. To expand upon his design process even further, DiTullo joined us for a couple of Instagram Live interviews, including a session dedicated to rendering. This episode focuses on how DiTullo toggles back and forth between the design and model spaces in Fusion 360 while developing a silky smooth CMF (color, material, and finish) palette for his smartphone concept. Speaking of final touches, the final episode shows DiTullo as he renders his initial CAD model. The end result doesn’t include internal components, but it is a great way to visualize and share an initial idea with stakeholders before getting started with final touches. Next, watch DiTullo build a fast initial CAD model based on his thumbnail sketches in Fusion 360.

At this stage, he’s already considering details like hand feel and unique features. While he sketches, he discusses the real-time design considerations he makes in order to create a new product that hasn’t been done before.

In the first episode, DiTullo walks through his thumbnail sketching process in Autodesk Sketchbook.

Needless to say, whenever DiTullo gives an insight into his personal Fusion 360 design process, we listen up. Over the span of his two-decades-long career, he has truly designed it all-from footwear for Nike to speakers for Polk Audio to a design language for ICON. DiTullo is the epitome of a “Jack of All Trades” when it comes to industrial design. Michael DiTullo recently released a three-part video series with Autodesk and Wacom that shows how he takes a concept design from thumbnail sketch to final render using Fusion 360 on a Wacom Cintiq Pro.
