Sizing steel rims is not the big problem it can when using some older PW reloaders. Thankfully, the MEC Supersizer and the collet type sizing stations on the various MEC reloaders that have one are adjustable. I've had some feeding trouble with several of my repeaters. The ring or die type resizing stations on any older reloaders so not resize the steel rims down enough to reliably feed in some guns.
Steel rims are less elastic and more resistant to resizing than brass rims. So naturally, we press any reasonably safe hull we can get into service. Unfortunately for us 16 gauge folks, that means virtually any fired hull we can get ha a steel rim. Today's promo hulls are meant to be shot an tossed. However, the ammo industry has pretty much stopped using brass rims on promotonal grade hulls and also on a fair number of target grade hulls as well. They also worked amazingly well with a number of promotional quality hulls for a long time. The PW press and many other quality presses were designed primarily for high volume reloading of premium target grade shotshells that have brass rims or bases. There for awhile, MEC was selling alot of 16 Supersizer's. SASS has banned this procedure, it is a match disqualification if a shooter is using shells of this type in competition. Hodgdon Powder did a pressure test on some subject 12 ga shells that were deformed by this method after loading. supersizer and reducing the first 1/2" of a 12 ga shell.
